Regardless of your feelings about the Monica Lewinsky affair, the impeachment of President Clinton revolved around specific legalities about whether he lied about his interactions with Monica Lewinsky. Objective evidence has emerged that show that President Bush intended to lie and shape intelligence and facts in order to justify going to war in Iraq. Raw Story reports that:
"The Downing Street Memo, official minutes of a 2002 meeting between British Prime Minister Tony Blair, members of British intelligence MI-6 and various members of the Bush administration, notes that MI-6 director Richard Dearlove said, “Bush wanted to remove Saddam, through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy.”...There was little discussion in Washington of the aftermath after military action. [emphasis added]
Some people consider that sort of lying more important and less justifiable than lies about sex with interns. At a minimum Congress should ask the question. A coalition called After Downing Street has formed to seek a Congressional Resolution of Inquiry into whether
President Bush committed impeachable offenses by lying to Congress, the
military and the public about the threat posed by Iraq and the presence
of WMD's.
Representative John Conyers from Michigan, the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee and 88 other Representatives (update: now up to 94) have sent a letter to the White House requesting answers to five specific questions, to which White House press secretary Scott McLellan said he has “no need to respond,” according to the New York Times.
Representative Conyers is now asking citizens to sign on to the letter. His original goal was to get 100,000 signatures; so far 110,001 (I just signed up) have signed, and the goal has increased to 250,000.
Meanwhile, a coalition of progressive bloggers, led by Shakespeare's Sister, has formed the Big Brass Alliance to support After Downing Street, which I've also joined, late as usual. Here's what you can do:
- Read the Congressional letter and sign up here
- Visit Afterdowningstreet.org and use the tools they've created to contact your Congressional representatives and otherwise spread information
- Read the Downing Street Memo here
- If you have a blog, visit and join the Big Brass Alliance
