Cigarette Butts: no small problem for the environment

 

Early in my career as an environmental activist I found the idea of litter as an environmental issue laughable and misguided. What can I say -- it's far from the only thing I was wrong about when I was young. Here's a few bits of butt information from the New YorkTimes:

• Keep America Beautiful and the Ocean Conservancy estimate that butts are at least 28% of all items littered nationwide
• Butts are not biodegradable [and] can release can release toxic chemicals including nicotine, benzene and cadmium
• [R]ecent experiments had shown that one butt has enough poisons to kill half the minnows in a liter of water — a standard laboratory test for toxins — in 96 hours

To avoid littering butts you can carry reusable or disposable pocket ashtrays, available locally from Keep Kansas City Beautiful and lots of places on the web.

Salon has published the second installment of Crazy right-wing myths about Obama. Here's a few excerpts:

Michelle Malkin: Stimulus funding will pay to run a maglev train between Disneyland and whorehouses in Nevada.

Is that because the whorehouse customers want to go to Disneyland? Or do the kids in Disneyland want to visit the whorehouses? Or is there some sort of weird "Furry" market for Disney characters in Nevada whorehouses?

Jonah Goldberg: European fascists were actually leftists and because Hitler was an organic-eating vegetarian he must have been a proto-hippie. And there's a bundle of rods pictured on the back of the dime called the fasces in Latin.

Did Obama do that to the dime? Hasn't the current dime been in use since 1976? Was Gerald Ford a secret fascist? Is that really why he pardoned Nixon?

Radio host Alex Jones: Obama has created his own version of the Hitler Youth. "[this]...will nationalize charitable work, using slave labor to help the State to further marginalize Christianity..." Right Wing News seethed. "...this and Obama's Serve America Act are part of his stated plan to create a race-based, Gestapo-style 'Civilian National Security Force' as large and well-funded as the military."

Um, what? No, really, what?

Too many crazies to name: Obama wants to take our guns away.

Some of these myths are (loosely) connected to some bill or statement or some interpretation of some other crazy person's rantings. This one's just made up.

These would be way more entertaining if they weren't so frightening.
